BELLA'S STORY

CONDITION – Rasmussen's Encephalitis
AGE: 16

Imagine a cure to a condition so severe that the only option is to disconnect half your child’s brain. That was the reality for eight-year-old Bella and her mom Bev in 2013.

Bella was diagnosed with Rasmussen’s Encephalitis (RE), which is a rare neurological disease that causes epileptic seizures, cognitive deficits, and, in some cases, paralysis of half the body. RE is resistant to standard anti-seizure medicines, so the only known “cure” is a hemispherectomy.

With Saskatchewan not having a children’s hospital at the time of her diagnosis, Bella desperately needed out-of-province treatment, and received a complex and lengthy surgery, effectively paralyzing her entire left side. Remarkably, after the surgery, doctors have said that there are no long-term, life-threatening health concerns. Still dealing with the daily effect of epilepsy and having seizures, Bella receives bi-weekly blood immune treatments here at Jim Pattison Children's Hospital to assist with her care. She is one of many children who are regular visitors to Saskatchewan's only specialized Children’s Hospital, who benefits from the support of the Roughrider & Children's Hospital Foundations Lottery.
